Husband of Cora Crawley. Father to Mary, Edith and Sybil Crawley
Played by Hugh Bonneville
Qualities: regal, resolute, commanding, benevolent, paternal
The 7th Earl of Grantham and the patriarch of majestic, sprawling Downton Abbey, Robert takes his role as caretaker and protector of the grand home and its way of life extremely seriously. While loving, loyal and generous to his family and those closest to him, he is also stoic, resistant to change and a staunch believer in tradition and customs. He scoffs at his mother Violet’s many protestations against change but, is actually more rigid than she is.
While he loves and cherishes his three daughters very much, Robert longs to have also fathered a son to inherit the estate and the fortune tied to it. Still, he is willing to accept old rules that dictate his third cousin as heir apparent, welcoming him deeper into the family fold. Robert’s hopes for a direct heir to be born are tragically dashed in Season 1. In Season 2, the harrowing events of the Great War definitely don’t leave him unscathed, and prefaced a wave of financial and personal upheaval that again threatened to knock Robert from his foundation.
Once again, he finds himself left to soldier on as forces both external and otherwise threaten those he loves most. All of his fortitude and resolve will be called upon, but will he have the foresight to ensure the best for both his family, and their home?
My lords, ladies, and gentlemen. May I have your attention, please? Because I very much regret to announce that we are now at war with Germany.
