Lady Mary Crawley
Eldest daughter of Robert and Cora Crawley, Lord and Lady Grantham. Widow of Matthew Crawley. Mother of George Crawley.
Played by Michelle Dockery
Qualities: graceful, headstrong, entitled, selfish at times, caring
Lady Mary Crawley is beautiful, used to receiving premium attention and believes that she deserves the best. While her actions and attitudes, especially early in the series, seem to bely a shallow arrogance, she can also be a warm, caring and fierce ally to those close to her. Anna, her maid, and Downton’s butler, Carson, are examples of those she shows a softer, more generous side to.
Within the family, Mary’s relationship with her remaining sister can be strained and quarrelsome, but will things change now that Edith seems poised to move into the spotlight herself. Mary was closer with youngest sister, Sybil, and while she has a soft spot for her Papa, her relationship with her mother can also be contentious and full of friction.
Throughout the first two seasons, tragic and unfortunate events, misunderstandings and hurtful revelations kept Mary and her eventual husband, Matthew, from fulfilling her romantic destiny. In Season 3, their long-awaited union was cut far too short, and Mary was left to raise her son without the love of her life. Will she be able to cope with an uncertain future without Matthew?
MARY: Dear Lord, I don’t pretend to have much credit with you. I’m not even sure that you’re there. But if you are, and if I’ve ever done anything good, I beg you to keep him safe.
