CALL THE MIDWIFE: SEASON ONE
Call the Midwife is a moving, funny, intimate, and above all, true-to-life look at the exhilarating stories of a midwife in poverty stricken East London in the 1950s, based on Jennifer Worth’s best selling memoirs.
Jenny Lee knows nothing about hardship, poverty, or indeed, life itself. Direct from nursing school, Jenny joins an order of nursing nuns at Nonnatus House and a team of midwives providing the poorest women in London with the best possible care. The life that greets Jenny is a world away from what she’s used to. The streets teem with children – families of between six and ten children are commonplace – and with just one, eight-bed maternity ward to serve the whole district, most deliveries take place at home. The drama follows Jenny as she meets her patients for the first time – women like Conchita, who is on her 25th pregnancy, and Mary, a prostitute, pregnant and just 15 years old – all while holding her own secret past.
CALL THE MIDWIFE: SEASON TWO
The inspiring British drama Call the Midwife that rivalled Downton Abbey’s ratings in the UK is back for another season of births, babies, and blossoming romance. Based on the best selling memoirs by Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife follows Jenny Lee as she tries to provide the poorest women of in London’s East End slums with the best possible care. This season the Poplar community has plenty of fresh challenges to throw at the midwives. Filled with new challenges, new drama, and most of all, new lives, this season is back with more heartwarming moments than ever.
LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX SEASON ONE
In this heartwarming and uplifting drama, childhood sweethearts Alan (Derek Jacobi, The King’s Speech) and Celia (Anne Reid, Upstairs Downstairs) both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other all over again when they are reunited on the internet after nearly 60 years. Their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age. But this is also a story about family, and with family comes baggage. Celia’s respectable, head teacher daughter Caroline is juggling bringing up two boys and dealing with her husband’s infidelity, while Alan’s rebellious, complicated middle-aged daughter Gillian struggles to make a living on a beautiful but bleak farm. How will these two very different women cope with their parents’ announcement that they’ve decided to get married?
THE PARADISE SEASON ONE
Set amidst the Victorian splendor of Britain’s first department store, The Paradise is a rags-to-riches story of a young girl who falls in love with the intoxicating charms of the modern world. As Denise finds her feet as a lowly shop girl, she must navigate her way through power struggles, intrigues, and affairs. When the shop’s dashing and reckless owner, John Moray, spots her talents, she knows she can use this opportunity to rise to great things. The 3-disc set also includes the special feature, Behind The Doors of Paradise, containing a tour of the set; cast interviews and a visit to the show’s costume department.
