As part of VisionTV’s celebration of Black History Month 2016, we’re proudly airing an encore presentation of Songs of Freedom featuring Canadian soprano sensation, Measha Brueggergosman.

In episode two of the four-part series, Brueggergosman dives deeper into a collection of Freedom Songs that hold a special place in her heart and show off her incredible vocal range.

Immediately, viewers are invited inside for an intimate, impassioned performance of “In the Garden,” in which Brueggergosman’s magnetic voice is only accompanied by the sweet piano sounds of Musical Director and Co-Producer, Aaron Davis. This stripped down affair is as comforting as it is inspirational.

“If [this song] doesn’t make you cry, you have a heart of stone and I feel bad for you,” said Brueggergosman with a laugh. “It is the most intimate and it’s supposed to feel like you’re peeking in on somebody saying something super personal.”

As the episode moves forward, Brueggergosman discusses her relationship with Jesus, stating: “Well, you know I love Jesus. So there’s a tremendous amount of motivation and inspiration found there. If you think of yourself as a vessel, or as a messenger, or as a servant, it takes a lot of the responsibility off of you. You can really just allow yourself to be used.”

Soon, Brueggergosman and Davis are back at it again, this time privately working on an arrangement for the soulful classic, “Wade in the Water.” During an interview segment discussing her admiration of Davis, Brueggergosman hilariously witnesses the man she’s complimenting pass by behind her on a canoe. You know what they say about great musicians – they have impeccable timing!

Once “Wade in the Water” is taken to Brueggergosman’s full band – Rob Piltch (guitars), Marc Rogers (bass), Davide DiRenzo (drums) and Marko Simmonds (vocals) and Davis (piano) – the tune very much has what Brueggergosman describes as a “pretty sassy” vibe to it.

In arguably the most emotionally pronounced moment of the episode, Brueggergosman stands solo within a gorgeous church to belt out “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” a song in which the vocalist says “you don’t play with.” Thus, the soprano delivered this solo musical moment with as much confidence and focus as a seasoned tightrope walker.

Back at the Cherry Brook United Baptist Church in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Marko Simmonds and the Nova Scotia Mass Choir join Brueggergosman for an impressive, enthusiastic rendition of “His Eye is on the Sparrow.” As everyone sways, smiles and let their bright eyes shine, you can’t help but get a true sense for the significance of such a song.

Packed to the brim with moving musical moments, the second episode of Songs of Freedom will make you dance and reflect. Be sure to catch it on Friday, February 12 at 10pm ET/7pm PT on VisionTV, with further episodes airing every Friday thoughout February.
