While strides are being made, public perception of mental health is, in many ways, still not where it needs to be. Thus, when impactful figures like Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Harry sign up to help spread awareness, one can’t help but think more individuals will take note.
Recently, the Royal trio partnered with Heads Together, a UK-wide campaign that “aims to change the national conversation on mental health.” Heads Together is made up of seven like-minded charitable initiatives.
So why did the young Royals feel compelled to get involved?
“Through their work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities, and with veterans, their royal highnesses have seen time and time again that unresolved mental health problems lie at the heart of some of our greatest social challenges,” reads a statement issued by a spokesperson for Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry. “They are passionate about tackling the stigma surrounding the issue. Too often, they have seen that people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health.”
It continued: “This fear of prejudice and judgment stops people from getting help and can destroy families and end lives. They want to help change the national conversation.”
Heads Together has subsequently been selected as The Virgin Money London Marathon 2017 Charity of the Year. As a result, those participating in the event will help generate funds and awareness for the Heads Together initiative and hopefully “end the stigma [of] mental health once and for all.”
