It’s hard to believe that the Disney animated classic, “Beauty and the Beast,” is now 25-years-old. To mark this special anniversary, The Film Society of Lincoln Center hosted a screening of the film on Sunday, September 18 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

After the screening, “Beauty and the Beast” composer Alan Menken appeared on stage and began performing the film’s title track. Then, to everyone’s surprise and roaring approval, Angela Lansbury joined Menken and classily sang her heart out. As you may recall, Lansbury starred in “Beauty and the Beast” as the voice of Mrs. Potts.

“Believe me, it’s pretty frightening for me. I haven’t sung in public in a long time,” said Lansbury following her appearance. “But with Alan [Menken], you can do anything. He’s just brilliant.”

As for “Beauty and the Beast” itself, Lansbury continues to have a sizeable affection for the film.

“The thing about this particular story is that the characters are so real, and the voices are played by great actors — I don’t count myself necessarily among them,” added Lansbury. “You get a crowd like that together and a story with so much stuff in it, and you have a big success. Disney has had that success.”

“Beauty and the Beast” won a pair of Academy Awards: Best Original Song and Best Original Score. Meanwhile, in 2014 Lansbury won an Honorary Academy Award.

On September 20, Disney will release a special 25th anniversary edition of “Beauty and the Beast” on Blu-ray and DVD.
