Jenna Coleman - Victoria

One of the trickier elements of creating and evolving a big-ticket period drama is by ensuring that the era and those within it are represented as accurately as possible.

In “Victoria,” Jenna Coleman’s young, girlish looks allow her to effectively play the 18-year-old Queen, even though the actress herself is 31 years of age. Although an actress playing above or below her actual age isn’t a new concept, some believe said concept can only go so far.

Considering that Queen Victoria went on to reign for nearly 64 years, some have already begun to speculate if and when Coleman will no longer be able to play the enduring monarch.

During an interview at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival in April, “Victoria” series creator and writer, Daisy Goodwin, attempted to cool down the idea that Coleman could soon enough be out of the throne.

“I think we’ve got quite a long way to go before we need to re-cast Jenna,” explained Goodwin. “We’re moving quite slowly through the 1840s.

“We haven’t even caught up with [Coleman’s] real age,” she added. “So, I think Jenna will be on our screens for some time to come.”

Regardless of when or if “Victoria” gets to the point when Coleman will need to be replaced, the young actress is certainly thrilled with the legendary historic figure she gets to play and continuously learn more about.

“It is so fascinating to think of [Victoria’s] experience inside the palace and outside those four walls and what her relationship was to the public,” says Coleman of Queen Victoria. “So it’s about fulfilling that on screen, seeing her the way we see her, as Queen Victoria in this role that she plays. It’s also [about] seeing her as the girl that she was, behind the scenes and playing between the private and public worlds.”

This week on “Victoria” (Tuesday, May 2 at 8pm ET/5pm PT): When Victoria’s efforts to secure Albert a settlement are rejected by parliament, both she and her fiancé let paranoia reign and start to fear for their future together. As the wedding draws ever closer and the tension escalates, will Victoria and Albert manage to reconcile their differences in time?
