Martin Clunes - Julia's House

On “Doc Martin,” Martin Clunes plays a crusty doctor that has a tough time offering compassion and affection to those he encounters. In real life, however, Clunes is a genuine philanthropist who has his heart in the right place.

Over the weekend, Clunes took a break from filming the upcoming season of “Doc Martin” to cut the ribbon during the opening of a new Julia’s House children’s hospice facility in Wiltshire.

“Julia’s House is not a typical children’s hospice,” reads a statement upon the Julia’s House website. “We provide practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, providing frequent and regular support in their own homes, in the community or at our hospice.”

The “state-of-the-art” Wiltshire location helped come into existence thanks to sizeable charitable donations, including £100,000 from readers of the U.K.’s Gazette & Herald.

As for Clunes, he didn’t just show up to Saturday’s opening celebration to lend a celebrity face to the occasion. Rather, he also helps with the hospice’s fundraising initiatives. For instance, Clunes – who is a Patron for Julia’s House – is active in trying to raise money so that more nurses can work at both the new Wiltshire location and the previously existing spot in Dorset.

“Julia’s House nurses are amazing,” comments Clunes. “I have witnessed first-hand the difference they make to families struggling to cope. In the hospice and out in the community, they are the trusted extra pair of skilled hands that not only provide parents with respite, but with the confidence to enjoy that time out knowing their precious child is getting the very best care. They are also friendly and fun – a lovely bunch! Fund a Nurse is a great way for the public to get behind the people that make Julia’s House so special.”

Good on you, Martin!

“Doc Martin” can be seen Wednesdays at 9pm ET/6pm PT!
