A documentary produced in association with VisionTV has been honoured at the 2005 Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival .

Footbinding: Search for The Three-Inch Golden Lotus , a film produced, written and directed by British Colombia filmmaker Yue-Qing Yang, received the National Film Board Kathleen Shannon Award along with a $1,000 cash prize. This award is given to independent filmmakers who provide an opportunity “ for people outside the dominant culture to speak for themselves.”

The hour-long documentary, which made its world television premiere on VisionTV last December, places a spotlight on the taboo topic of f ootbinding in China. Though, t he practice was abolished in the 1930s, its cruel legacy deeply affected Yue-Qing: her mother, aunt and grandmother all bound their feet , and bear the scars.

Produced with the participation of VisionTV and the National Film Board of Canada, Footbinding follows the Chinese-born filmmaker as she returns home to uncover the truth about a tradition responsible for centuries of silent female suffering.

Said Alberta Nokes, VisionTV's Director of Independent Production: “We are very pleased to play a role in bringing important social issues to light through film, and are delighted that Yue-Qing's documentary has received such well - deserved recognition.”
