Being a single parent isn't easy. Neither is being a minister. Put the two together and you have the chaotic life of Mike Weber (Dan Aykroyd), a widowed Episcopalian minister who is stuck in the balancing act of keeping his four rambunctious kids in line, while dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities that come part and parcel with the life of the clergy. Now a devoted man of the cloth, Mike did not always lead such a righteous lifestyle. In the earlier days of his youth, his favourite mode of transportation was a motorcycle, and the foundation of his wardrobe consisted of jeans and black leather jackets. Mike's membership in "The Blacktop Vampires"
earned him several less-than-honorable mentions in the local newspaper for lawless
activities as well as his colorful "Wild Child" moniker.

But those days are ancient history because now Mike is devoted to his church and
family. However, this irreverent Reverend does find that his checkered past
gives him a wealth of knowledge to draw from as he deals with his parish and his progeny.
Mike is at home in the pulpit and commands it with ease, but leading a pack of rowdy kids down the straight and narrow path is a whole different story! It seems like there's always a crisis to deal with, whether eight-year-old Meredith (Courtney Chase) is trying to handcuff her little brother Fred (Spencer Breslin) to the toilet, or 11-year-old Andy (Brendon Ryan Barren) is conducting a crude cryogenics experiment involving earthworms. Of course there's always the special challenge of dealing with his oldest son Kenny (Kevin Sheridan), a 14-year-old who is none too happy about his father's vocation.

As if Mike doesn't have enough fires to put out on the home front, there's also the matter of Bishop Jerome (Dakin Matthews). A staid officer of the church who questions Mike's unorthodox way of doing things on a daily basis, the bishop's main goal in life is to see his name grace the side of a building somewhere in the diocese. Adding to his complicated life is the undeniable attraction he has to Bridgette Collins (Melinda McGraw), a lovely reporter for Detroit Weekly, who makes her views about the church's lack of female influence clearly known.

Despite the obstacles Mike hurdles leading his church and his kids, and the harried nature of everyday life, he seems to be very content with things the way they are. But when the going seems to be getting a little tough, he always has his sense of humour to see him through, and the knowledge that in some small way he is helping to make a difference.
