An ego-centric film director resorts to his mastery of special effects to murder a vengeful friend who discovered the director’s role in the movie-stunt death of his sister years before in Columbo: Murder, Smoke and Shadows.

Investigating the murder, Columbo gets led into staged encounters to throw him off the trail but, the guilty party may not realize that the detective has some directing talents of his own he can put to use.
