Nearly 300 years after her death, Kateri Tekakwitha made history on October 20, 2012, by becoming the first aboriginal woman to be recognized as a Saint. Her journey began when she was born to a pagan Iroquois father and an Algonquin Christian mother in present-day upstate New York in 1656. At six, she and her family were hit with smallpox. The lone survivor, Tekakwitha was left scarred and disfigured and moved to her uncle’s home near Montreal where, she was baptized by Jesuit missionaries and granted the Catholic name “Kateri,” which is Mohawk for Catherine. The “Lily of the Mohawks” is the subject of this moving documentary that takes viewers from her birthplace to Montreal and Kahnawà:ke, and from Washington State to New Mexico, as they follow St. Kateri’s incredible journey of deep faith, heroic sacrifice and love of Christ.
