Brought to you by Sun Life Financial. Life’s brighter under the sun.
Victoria is dead; Edward is King. Upstairs is the family; downstairs the servants. When actresses Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins devised the original series in the 1970s, it was because they felt the role of the working class was being airbrushed out of period TV dramas. The series was initially planned to focus on Downstairs. “But we decided we wanted it to be about both servants and masters,” says Marsh. “And in a way, that’s why it was such a wonderfully easy idea, because there are so many stories you can do about different classes rubbing up against each other.”

Programming Note: Upstairs Downstairs will be pre-empted on Wednesdays May 15 and 22 by the final two episodes of Downton Abbey Season 3. Upstairs Downstairs will return to its regular time slot on Wednesday, May 29, immediately following our network premiere of Call The Midwife.

The series follows the lives of both the family and servants in the London townhouse at 165 Eaton Place. Richard Bellamy, the head of the household, is a member of Parliament, and his wife a member of the titled aristocracy. Below stairs, Hudson, the Scottish butler directs and guides the other servants about their tasks and (sometimes) their proper place. Real-life events from 1903-1930 are incorporated into the stories of the Bellamy household.
7 Emmys, 2 BAFTAs, a Peabody, and a Golden Globe later, the original 1970s Upstairs Downstairs series went on to reach one billion people in 70 countries! Now Canadians can relive, or discover, the perennially fascinating series.
