Each of our Detectives of VisionTV are cunning crime solvers, but no two are alike when it comes to their unique personality quirks. Every brilliant mind is known to have their fair share of idiosyncrasies that endear them to viewers, making us root for them again and again.

You may be familiar with the great Endeavour Morse, the brilliant, opera-loving detective as portrayed by Shaun Evans on Endeavour, which recently completed its run on VisionTV. But who and what came before Endeavour? Inspector Morse, of course! The original BAFTA-winning series starring John Thaw has arrived on VisionTV and explores the later life of the renowned Oxford-based investigator.

But who is Inspector Morse, really? What makes him an interesting character and how is he so adept at solving crimes? Let’s dive deep into all the ins and outs of DCI Morse and find out. You can watch Inspector Morse Saturdays at 6pm ET / 3pm PT on VisionTV.

  • Morse loves classical music

His favourite composer is Wagner and he’s very well versed in the classics, having studied them at Oxford. Morse even set up a music scholarship called “The Endeavour Award”.

  • Morse is known for his Jaguar

Morse drives a vintage red Jaguar Mark 2, originally changed from a Lancia in the novels. Despite driving a beautiful car, Morse doesn’t mind driving it dangerously.

  • Morse has a taste for English ale

He’ll enjoy a drink of real ale or whisky while he’s ruminating over cases, saying it helps him think better. As a diabetic, his drinking poses a health risk, and he’s also said he doesn’t want to end up like his father, who was an alcoholic.

  • Morse loves cryptic puzzles

Morse excels at crossword puzzles, and his sharp intellect helps him solve complex cases. He’s also a stickler for grammar and seems to enjoy pointing out other people’s mistakes.

  • Morse goes by Morse

Morse doesn’t like to tell others his unique first name, Endeavour. His way of revealing his name for the first time to someone is by giving them a cryptic clue.

  • Morse has a distaste for religion

He was nicknamed “Pagan” for not being a fan of religion. While he’s known as an atheist, he does have moments where he considers the existence of God and quotes scripture.

  • Morse doesn’t mind breaking the rules

Morse is an unconventional thinker and he’ll leave the rule following for his partners. No matter what it takes, Morse will find a way to bend the rules and think outside the box to catch a killer and bring about justice, whatever way he sees fit.

  • Morse is a gentleman

As a classic Englishman with a taste for the finer things, Morse maintains a façade of slight snobbery, but always treats others with respect. He has a strong sense of justice and despite his curmudgeonly attitude towards his partners, fans can recognize that Morse has a heart of gold.
