Let’s take a look at some of the best insightful quotes and advice from the thoughtful gardeners featured in Season 5 of Ageless Gardens

Episode 1, “A Healthy Future”, premiering Monday, May 5, features young gardeners learning about seeds and the horticulture industry, from the ground up.

“A young sapling grows into a big old tree and then it gets decrepit, but it’s still got this underground of fungi. The older trees help keep the younger ones alive. As we get to be the older people, we spread this knowledge, these nutrients, to the young forest coming up.”

– Leonie Croy (Gibsons, BC), co-founder of the Sunshine Coast Seed Saving Collective, a group of women who spread local knowledge about seed saving.

Episode 2, “Gardening with Family”, premiering Monday, May 12, explores how spending time in the garden with loved ones leads to wellness, a happy community, and family bonding.

“You don’t plant a garden for yourself. You plant a garden, so it’ll bring you both into a garden space. There’s always a lot of enjoyment being in the garden together.”

– Chris Janko (Surrey, BC), an exotic plant buyer/seller who collaborates with his partner to turn their small Surrey, BC garden space into a tropical getaway.

Episode 3, “Gardening for All Seasons”, premiering Monday, May 19,  travels across Canada and across seasons to witness gardens in various states of splendour.

“You really have to grow a variety of lilies to get a long bloom season. Of course, I take it to the extreme and try to grow all the lilies!”

– Leanne Dowd (Neepawa, MB), a rural gardener and lily connoisseur who identifies hidden and rare plants left by the previous owner.

Episode 4, “Gardening Heritage”, premiering Monday, May 26, focuses on how gardeners apply traditional knowledge, developed over several lifetimes to their gardens.

“There’s no such thing as obstacles. There’s just ways around the obstacles.”

– Bernie Nikolai (Edmonton, AB), a gardener who pushes climactic limits, growing gingko, Japanese maples, figs, peaches, and sweet cherries in a region as cold as Central Siberia.

Episode 5, “Harmony in the Garden”, premiering Monday, June 2, sees gardeners explore their horticultural creativity through textiles, photography, and flower arrangements.

“I am a harmonious person by nature, and I really want to extend the harmony outside of my body and my soul, and I have an absolute belief I can radiate those powers.”

– Anna Torma (Baie Verte, NB), a Governor General’s Award-winning textile artist weaves her garden and family life together with inspiring tapestries.
