Path of Pilgrims

For many, pilgrimages to holy sites and significant events are an act of devotion that is at once demanding, and immeasurably rewarding. Through their passages, individuals hope to gain greater understanding of their faith, and their own spiritual purpose – revelations that can have a lasting and fulfilling impact.

In the one-hour documentary Path of Pilgrims, filmmakers Kate Kroll and Marilyn Thomas follow suit as waves of people make their way to Nepal for the annual observance of Saga Dawa, the Tibetan Buddhist celebration of Buddha’s life, enlightenment and parinirvana (death). It’s a colourful and insightful look into a month that inspires both reflection and contemplation, and into one of the fastest growing religions in the world.

Offering an exploration into the rituals that constitute much of the festival, which begins in May and ends in June, Path of Pilgrims is an immersion in the celebration itself in Boudhanath, Nepal, as well as the locations of significance for Buddhist pilgrims; Buddha’s birth in Lumbini Nepal, the cave in Bodgaya India where Buddha sought enlightenment and Kushinigar India where Buddha reached parinirvana.

Tracing the Buddha’s footsteps, from affluent beginnings, through phases of austerity, and towards a path of balance and moderation, Path of Pilgrims also delivers an intimate look at faith in adversity through the eyes of exiled Tibetans, celebrated author Victor Chan and the Dalai Lama’s brother.

Throughout, their stories of discovery, coupled with the historical context of their struggle, underscore and illuminate the role that Buddhism has played for many in the years in exile, and the peace that they derive from their religion.

As the film suggests, the pilgrims’ paths mirror the internal, spiritual journey through which they strive to ultimately find happiness, all the while reinforcing the essential humanity of the Buddha – a comforting reminder of the potential in all of us to achieve a more profound and spiritual existence.
